Auditions
Auditions
Auditions and interviews help us assess each student's abilities and career potential as an aspiring performing artist. They also help students evaluate whether the university is the right fit for them, and vice versa.
For those interested in acting, music theatre, design (scene, costume, or lighting), theatre technology, or stage management, the process should include one or more of the following:
-
Audition—Actors should prepare two memorized monologues (two to three minutes each) from a contemporary play or, with appropriate experience and comfort, a classic play.
- Music Theatre majors should prepare one monologue and one verse from a Broadway musical; they must provide recorded musical accompaniment on a CD or MP3 player.
-
Portfolio review—Stage managers, designers, and technicians should present examples of work in the form of photographs, prompt books, slides, and/or drawings of productions on which they have worked. Examples of related skills (e.g., sewing, construction, drawing) are also helpful.
-
Interview—All prospective students will interview with the department chair and/or a faculty member to assess skills and a mutual fit. Interviews enable students to talk with a faculty member informally and discover what the university and the student have to offer each other.
-
Résumé and headshot—Both are required at the time of the audition.
The Dance specialization requires an audition. Enrollment is limited. Audition requirements include:
- Prospective dance students will participate in a brief, group dance audition consisting of taught dance combinations from the following techniques:
- Ballet
- Jazz
- Musical theatre
- Tap
- Students will also perform a 30-second dance solo in their preferred dance style, providing their own accompaniment on a CD or MP3 player.
- Students must choose one of the following:
- Present a monologue, 1 minute to 1 minute 30 seconds in length
OR - Perform one verse from a Broadway musical (approx 32 bars), providing their own accompaniment on a CD or MP3 player.
- Students must provide a headshot and résumé at the time of their audition.
Auditions and interviews are held on campus throughout the year, by appointment only. We also host auditions and interviews at various sites around the country, also by appointment. To book an audition, contact the Performing Arts Department administrative assistant at terri.ross@santafeuniversity.edu or 1-505-473-6439 .
Auditioning by DVD or YouTube – Students who cannot visit Santa Fe University or arrange an off-campus live audition may send a DVD audition or audition via YouTube. The requirements for this type of audition are the same as described above. For actors, the whole body should be featured on the recording. Use the best quality video and audio recording devices possible. The performance should not be edited; it should be a "live" audition, with no stopping of the recording during the entire audition. At the beginning of the recording, students should state their full name and the date. Prospective students may complete their Santa Fe University application either before or after auditioning.
