Moving Image Arts (Film/Video) Facilities

Garson Communications Center
The Moving Image Arts Department is housed in this 65,000-square-foot production and
postproduction center, known as one of the finest undergraduate facilities in the country.
The technical office is stocked with a full complement of equipment for student use, including:

  • Panavision, Arriflex, Aaton, and Bolex film cameras
  • Panasonic P2 and AVCHD and Canon high-definition cameras
  • Mole-Richardson, Kino Flo, ARRI, Litepanels, and Rosco lights
  • Fisher Model 10 Dolly, Matthews Doorway Dolly, VariZoom jib
  • Sennheiser, Sony, Mackie, Shure, TRAM, and Lectrosonics audio equipment
  • A large inventory of grip and gaffer equipment

The center also boasts a 2,200-square-foot teaching stage with a multichannel lighting control
board and lighting grid.

Postproduction facilities

  • Avid Media Composer systems
  • Final Cut Pro HD editing stations
  • Pro Tools–based audio postproduction editing systems
  • Blu-ray™ HD DVD duplication with custom label creation
  • Two 16-seat state-of-the-art Apple Macintosh computer labs with the latest multimedia software
  • HD and multiformat playback on HD large screens in all classrooms
  • A 40-seat, multipurpose, large-screen HD video and 16-mm screening room
  • A multiformat dubbing room for tape-to-tape or tape-to-digital file transfer
  • The Moving Image Arts Archive, which houses several thousand media titles spanning
  • Blu-ray™, DVD, and other platforms

The Screen
New Mexico's premier cinematheque. Founded at the university and curated by Brent Kliewer,
The Screen showcases the finest in world, art, and independent cinema—with all movies free of
charge for Moving Image Arts students.

  • The Screen features:
  • A 16-speaker Dolby Digital 6.1 Surround Sound system
  • A high-definition curved screen
  • Luxurious stadium seating (170 seats)

MOV-iN GALLERY
An intimate exhibition space devoted to new media and time-based artworks, the gallery serves as
a focal point and learning center for curators, gallery owners, and collectors who are engaged with
the complexities of the exhibition and commerce of new-media art forms.

Garson Studios
Garson Studios has hosted the production of more than 30 professional films over the last decade.
Films made here have ranged from No Country for Old Men to Cowboys & Aliens and have starred
renowned actors such as Jeff Bridges in True Grit, Natalie Portman in Brothers, and Harrison Ford
and Daniel Craig in Cowboys & Aliens. Students from the Moving Image Arts Department have the
unique opportunity to intern on these professional film productions.

The studios include:

  • Two motion picture soundstages (14,000 square feet and 7,500 square feet)
  • Back lot space
  • Wardrobe and dressing rooms
  • Production offices
