Degree Program

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Moving Image Arts (Film/Video)

Cinematic storytelling is at the heart of our Moving Image Arts bachelor's program, which offers a comprehensive, hands-on, four-year curriculum that integrates film, video, and digital production with critical studies and writing. This program complements the university's expansive liberal arts core curriculum, which is predicated on a breath of knowledge that all educated artists should possess.

Our goal is to educate the total filmmaker, while also providing the opportunity to focus on a
specific discipline within the craft.

PRODUCTION
From the moment they enter the building students are "in production." Introductory classes introduce students to the elements of visual language and storytelling and provide hands-on experience with production and postproduction equipment and technology. From there, students will learn the fundamental and advanced elements of all phases of film and digital production. We place an emphasis on providing a collaborative environment where students can work together to produce original and personal work while they gain the tools and skills necessary to succeed in this dynamic and competitive industry.

SCREENWRITING
Essential to becoming an effective storyteller is the ability to articulate a vision on the page. An introductory Ideation course helps students discover their unique creative process and allows students to understand what they want to express as an artist and why. Introductory through advanced writing courses complement our curriculum and are available for students to learn the art of writing for the screen.

CRITICAL STUDIES AND FILM HISTORY
Fundamental to an education in the moving image arts is the ability to critically examine and analyze works for the screen. Through the study of film history, the role of media in society, various forms and genres, and national cinemas, students will learn about the social, political, and cultural context in which moving image arts are created. Developing a critical eye includes analysis of their own work.
