Šalamun, considered the greatest living Slovenian poet, will visit creative writing classes and give a free public reading of his work

Santa Fe, N.M.—Sept. 20, 2012—The Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD) Creative Writing Department announced that it will host Slovenian poet Tomaž Šalamun on campus Oct. 8–10.
Šalamun will visit creative writing classes and will give a public reading in the O’Shaughnessy Performance Space, followed by a brief Q&A session, on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. This free event is co-sponsored by the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).
Considered Slovenia’s greatest living poet and one of the foremost figures of the Eastern European poetic avant-garde, Šalamun attracted critical notice with his first collection, Poker, which was published when he was only 25. He was born in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1941 and grew up in Koper, Slovenia. Šalamun is revered by many American poets for his unique surrealistic style. His books have been translated into 21 languages, and nine of his 37 books of poetry have been published in English.
“We are so lucky to have the opportunity to bring Tomaž Šalamun to campus,” says Dana Levin, co-chair of SFUAD’s Creative Writing and Literature Department. “His work has had a huge impact on younger poets in particular, many of whom he has worked with on translating his poems into English. His writing is funny, strange, political and soulful. It demonstrates that surrealism can be a necessary civic language.”
