Santa Fe, N.M.—December 6, 2011—Students at Santa Fe University of Art and Design are exchanging creative ideas with their peers across the world on Frontier, a global digital community of students collaborating on art and design topics. Launched in September, Frontier is a forum where students and art professionals from around the world, share and discuss their work, join forces on projects and participate in art and design competitions.
Students from four other art and design universities also participate in Frontier: Domus Academy and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano in Milan, Italy; Media Design School in Auckland, New Zealand; and NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego, Calif. Including Santa Fe University, all five institutions are members of Laureate International Universities, a global network of more than 55 accredited online and campus-based universities in 26 countries.
“The philosophy behind Frontier is to connect like-minded young artists and designers across the globe through a multi-disciplinary community that’s nurtured by five top design schools in Europe, America and Australasia,” explained Larry Hinz, president of Santa Fe University of Art and Design. “The possibilities for student, alumni and faculty interaction are endless.”
Members of Frontier can upload work from their portfolios, create professional profiles, apply for scholarships, compete and collaborate with peers for impressive prizes, and learn about the latest art and design news from around the world. The community is designed to encourage critique and commentary from a global support network.
“I’m interested in community and collectivity,” said SFUAD Bachelor of Fine Arts student Lucy Puckett. “Being present with other art students is really fresh. I love that these partnerships are exactly what I relate to—and span the world.”
Frontier held its first competition in September, a poster design challenge that generated more than 20,000 votes on its Facebook page. Matteo Morelli of Italy’s NABA won the Best Design category (and a MacBook Pro); Viola Trenin, also from NABA, won the Most Popular Design category (and an iPad 2); and Rebecca Cubillo from SFUAD won the Member Prize (and a Diana F+ Deluxe camera kit).
A new competition, Fragmented City, calls for students to explore the concept of cities through a photographic lens—the unknown corners, sidewalks and rooftops that make each city unique and special. “Competitions within the Frontier network allow students to have their work seen and critiqued by the best in the world, including faculty members. It creates exposure and excitement for our young artists,” said Hinz.
