Santa Fe, N.M.—December 28, 2011—For the second year in a row, works by a Santa Fe University of Art and Design student and faculty member have been included in Dialog in the Arts, an annual exhibition organized by
Santa Fe Community College (SFCC). This year’s show, called Dialog in the Arts III: An Exhibition by Teachers and Their Students, opened Dec. 2 and will run through the end of January at SFCC’s Visual Arts Gallery. The mixed-media exhibition—which includes architectural design, drawing, photography and sculpture—focuses on collaborative efforts between students and their teachers.
Santa Fe University sophomore Chelsey Danielsen is exhibiting a large stop-motion animation set that she built and developed in her Mixed-Media Sculpture course. The set is a house constructed from found and fabricated parts, including tree bark, barn windows, cement blocks, Christmas lights and bones. The set also includes a stop-motion animated film viewed through a periscope/chimney.
The work of Danielsen’s teacher, Tom Miller, is also included in the show. A professor of Mixed Media Sculpture in the Art Department, Miller is exhibiting a piece titled Hole and Slab, a post-minimal, black-on-black diptych measuring 7.75” x 39” x 1.5”. Each panel is a low-relief, acrylic-painted sculpture that is both physical and illusory. This piece is part of Miller’s most recent body of work, which is focused on containing architecture.
Miller spoke about Danielsen’s work. “Chelsey is an interdisciplinary artist who divides her time between the sculpture studio and the animation lab,” he said. “She is working to tell a story that involves both her ‘off-grid’ building sensibilities and her stop-motion animation skills. She is a committed artist who will continue to evolve an artwork until the moment it leaves her hands.”
This collaborative exhibition features high school and college students from other local schools, including SFCC, Rio Rancho High School, the New Mexico School for the Arts and the Institute of American Indian Arts. The exhibit aims to highlight student/teacher collaboration and to introduce high school artists to their college and university peers, giving them the opportunity to interact with each other and exchange ideas.
The Art Department at Santa Fe University offers classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, installation art and other genres. Students may explore other disciplines as a minor or as practical applications. Housed in the Visual Arts Center, a stunning complex of buildings designed by award-winning architect Ricardo Legorreta, the Art Department prepares graduates for successful careers as working artists.
