Santa Fe, N.M.—January 24, 2012—The Photography Department of Santa Fe University of Art and Design will exhibit work by Photography faculty member Alex Emmons and B.F.A. in Photography alumna Wendy Young ('99). The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, Feb. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. and runs through Friday, April 27.
Emmons' work, titled House & Garden, draws from her interests including domestic space, memory, and current events. This project incorporates cyanotype, a 19th-century photographic process related to present day blueprints for architectural drawings. The exhibit includes photographic recordings of yard tools, garden plants, eggs, seedpods and the shadows of plants. Young's South is a visual exploration of white male culture in the South, where she grew up.

House & Garden
For the gallery installation component, I am investigating methods of printing on paper and fabric that enable viewers to become quickly intimate with my work, as if they are looking at their own sheets hung on a clothesline. As the cyanotype print shifts to a positive—due to the white outline possessing believable form, shape and shadows—I transport my viewers from the everyday into an objective mind space. They explore my typographic, forensic images to decipher the meaning of their own relative personal objects. — Alex Emmons
South
For many, the idea of white male culture in the South conjures pejorative descriptions such as redneck, good ol' boy, cracker, racist and misogynist. I have grown up with, been inspired by and been patronized by Southern white males. I married, procreated with and divorced a Southern white male. I have been taught by, preached to and employed by Southern white males. These pictures are an attempt to understand white male culture and to shed light on the kinds of men who impacted me during the 34 years I lived in the South. —Wendy Young
