Santa Fe, N.M.—December 15, 2011—Santa Fe University of Art and Design announced the launch of two degree programs that complement the university’s offerings in art, design and performing arts. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Arts Management is designed to prepare students for careers in the business of art and design and within an international economy that values creativity and innovation. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre with a specialization in Dance is tailored for talented students who want to pursue commercial forms of dance, such as opportunities with theatre companies, cruise ships, theme parks, resorts and music videos, among other possibilities. Both programs will launch with the 2012 fall semester. The BFA in Theatre with a specialization in Dance requires an audition, and enrollment is limited. Classes start Aug. 27, 2012.
The BBA in Arts Management offers a balanced curriculum of art, business and principles of creativity. In addition to preparing students for general business management, core courses explore foundations in business communications, music and theatre management, gallery and museum careers, art criticism, photography, and information technology for the arts. Students can track toward their career goals by choosing electives offered across several arts and design disciplines.
“The ability to think creatively is highly prized as a foundation for innovation in today’s competitive global economy,” said Gerry Snyder, the university’s vice president of academic affairs. “We are in a unique position to help our students develop the business, creative, and academic skills they need to succeed.”
The BFA in Theatre with a specialization in Dance will be one of a few programs in the western region to train students for targeted commercial dance careers. The curriculum emphasizes training in several forms of dance technique, including ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern dance and musical theatre dance. Acting and singing courses round out the program, so students can cultivate the wide range of skills they need to become versatile performers.
“The entertainment industry needs professionals who are deeply skilled in a variety of artistic and dance techniques, and this is the focus of our new BFA in Theatre with a specialization in Dance,” said John Weckesser, chair of the university’s Performing Arts Department.
Students in both programs will also benefit from the school’s location in Santa Fe, a vibrant cultural center that boasts an internationally renowned art market and serves as home to several professional dance companies. Many internship possibilities in the arts management and commercial dance fields in both not-for-profit and commercial arenas are available for students to gain valuable practical experience.
