Santa Fe, NM—May 11, 2010—Acclaimed photographer and professor at Santa Fe University of Art and Design David Scheinbaum is among 10 people chosen to receive the 2010 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts, New Mexico's highest artistic honor. The winners were nominated by colleagues and selected by Gov. Bill Richardson and First Lady Barbara Richardson.
Scheinbaum is a professor and chair of the Photography Department and director of the Marion Center for Photographic Arts at the university. He is considered an expert on the art and history of photography.
A professor at the university since 1979, Scheinbaum worked with renowned photography historian Beaumont Newhall for 15 years and is co-executor of his estate. In 1980, he and photographer/wife Janet Russek established the Santa Fe photography gallery Scheinbaum & Russek, Ltd. to exhibit the works of photographers, including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Minor White, Sebastiao Salgado, Laura Gilpin, Willard Van Dyke, Walter Chappell, Beaumont Newhall and Eliot Porter.
Scheinbaum's photographs are exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. "I am honored to receive this recognition as a college professor and as a working artist," Scheinbaum said.
The awards will be presented September 24 at ceremonies in the St. Frances Auditorium of the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, NM.
